ELECTION DAY: An
American Holiday, An American History
Voting is a hard-won privilege in our country. It was originally
enjoyed only by white, male landowners. Today it is a right
and responsibility for all American citizens over the age
This site is dedicated to celebrating the fun and traditions
of American presidential election days, while also noting the
deep significance involved in participating in the democratic
process. In casting our ballots, we help decide what kind of
country we are going to be.
You will find some fun stories about election days when parades
and celebrations marked the day. You’ll also find stories of
vote-rigging and ballot abuse that will remind you that political
trickery is nothing new.
Speaker and historian Kate Kelly has written Election
Day: An American Holiday, An American History and frequently
speaks on the history of the ballot box and the traditions
of election day.
